“We just dedicated the 5th Floor of CAS Building, from now on Alvarez Hall, in honor of the late Jim Alvarez, son of Palawan Governor Jose Ch. Alvarez. We hope that soon, we will have an Alvarez Building in UA&Ps future campus in the south…”
With these meaning-laden words, UA&P Co-founder Professor Dr. Bernardo M. Villegas spiced his closing remarks during the August 29 dedication ceremony. Although a public holiday, the Alvarez family came in full force. Governor Pepito and Mrs. Norma Roa Alvarez were joined by three daughters, a son-in-law, and two grandsons. They were joined in celebrating the event by Ms. Ginia Domingo, Columbian (KIA) Autocar Corporation CEO, family friends, and the chiefs of staff of top Palawan officials, together with UA&P ManCom and SSE faculty and staff.
SSE Dean Dr. Toti Gaa welcomed the guests a few minutes before 10:00 a.m., thanking everyone for joining the UA&P and SSE community and citing the advantages of having the dedication on a public holiday, which coincided with the 3rd death anniversary of Jim Alvarez. UA&P faculty Dr. Henry Basilio added a few words reminiscing his friendship with Jim, his ABEP student many years ago. Dr. Amado Saquido presented the commemorative plaque to the family, represented by Gov. Alvarez and Jim’s youngest son.
Fr. Gerry Patio, SSE Chaplain, presided over the dedication and blessing ceremonies, and volunteered that every 29th of August hereon, a Holy Mass celebrated in UA&P’s Stella Orientis Chapel will be offered for Jim Alvarez. The Chiefs of Staff of Gov. Alvarez, Caesar Samuel Magbanua, and Vice Gov. Socrates, Richard Socrates, assisted Fr Patio during the dedication rites capped by unveiling the big and bold stainless steel signage “Alvarez Hall” on the main wall of the 5th Floor CAS hallway.
After the closing remarks by Dr Villegas, who described the short and meaningful ceremonies as an intimate family get-together, event emcee Mrs. Leni Sunico invited everyone to the SSE Faculty Lounge for snacks and fun conversations. For almost an hour, the Alvarez family, UA&P ManCom and SSE faculty and staff, and the guests had an enjoyable time exchanging stories on everything under the sun. Some visited the SSE rooms, laboratories and workshops on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Floors of CAS accompanied by SSE faculty and staff, while others admired the huge decorative murals.
As he was leaving around noon, Gov. Alvarez joked to Dr. Villegas and SSE DevCom Chairman Dr. Lito Sandejas that “I will start saving in my piggy bank for your future building…”
